A Sacred Landscape

St Ninian's Isle, South Mainland. Remains of a 12th century chapel on an earlier site. The St Ninian's treasure (8th / 9th century silverwork hoard) was found here during excavations in the 1950s.

A stack on Papa Stour. The name means "the Big Island of the Priests". No archaeological remains of early monastic settlement have yet been found but stacks such as this were often used by Celtic monks for solitary retreat.
